Phosphoenix secures 1.3 million euros to take brain implant into humans
Phosphoenix, an Amsterdam MedTech company building a neuroprosthetic system for people with profound blindness, closed a 1.3 million euro round announced in September 2026. Existing backers TTT Medtech Fund, FIRST Fund and Innovatiefonds Noord-Holland were joined by ROM InWest. Chief Executive Officer Hans Brons said the money funds first-in-human preparations while the company builds towards a Series A financing.
The round is sized to one milestone rather than to ambition: preparing a first-in-human study with Amsterdam UMC and developing the neurostimulation system. Founded in 2019 by Pieter Roelfsema, Xing Chen and Bert Monna as a spin-off from the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience, the company raised pre-Seed capital in September 2022, and its Fountain Probe carries more than 1,000 microelectrodes toward a stated endpoint of functional vision.
