The Jotform Founder On Why Copied Leadership Models Fail

The founder of Jotform, who launched the company in 2006 with a computer science background and no experience managing a team, writes that it took him several years to settle into his own way of leading. He weighed ruling by fear like Steve Jobs against the hands-off manner of Warren Buffett, and adopted neither, landing instead on quiet empathy and vulnerability with employees.

The reference points on offer came from chairs very different from his own: a product autocrat and a capital allocator, neither running a young software company with a first hire. Borrowed archetypes held until pressure arrived, and his first firing exposed the gap, where he delayed for weeks despite repeated complaints. The lesson he draws is that default settings surface before any model does.
