Why Checking An SDG Box Is Not The Same As Funding Progress
The United Nations reported in July 2026 that 49 percent of Sustainable Development Goal targets are advancing too slowly and 15 percent are regressing below 2015 baselines, against an estimated shortfall of about 4 trillion US dollars. Milet Aquino and Gina Estipona of the Association of Foundations argue that funding projects that merely declare alignment with the 17 goals is not closing the gap.
Their case rests on what gets funded instead of what gets labelled. More than 8,800 multi-stakeholder initiatives have been registered with the SDG Actions Platform since 2015, yet the organisations that coordinate them remain underfunded. Convening partners, facilitating difficult conversations and following up on commitments are treated as overhead rather than as the work itself, which leaves grant decisions answering a template question rather than a stated endpoint.
