Netflix spends one billion dollars on live shows that draw one percent of viewing
Netflix puts about one billion dollars, or five percent of its roughly twenty billion dollar annual content budget, into live programming that accounts for only about one percent of viewing. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, speaking at a Bloomberg conference in Los Angeles, said the two hundred eighty-one billion dollar company is growing more slowly than he wants. Global engagement rose just two percent in its latest reported period.
Netflix does not judge its live slate by hours watched. The value lies in subscribers who stay: sports, wrestling, comedy and major cultural events give existing customers a reason to remain and make the service feel less like a library visited now and then. Revenue still grows at double-digit rates in every region, so the money goes toward limiting cancellations, not toward adding viewing time.
