The mentoring method an interviewer learned from an entry-level job candidate

An entry-level candidate changed how one Entrepreneur contributor mentors people. During a job interview early in the rise of social media marketing, she showed she understood the platforms better than the interviewer did. The contributor, who reports twenty years of coaching and mentoring, later started a reverse mentoring initiative for senior leaders. The contributor now follows four steps, one of which gathers feedback from five people in the mentee's network.

In that interview, the useful knowledge came from the least senior person at the table. The interviewer had learned about social media secondhand, through corporate training programs, agencies and industry experts. The candidate had grown up using the platforms every day. Advice that comes only from consultants and peers keeps that same distance from the ground, and the later reverse mentoring initiative was set up to close the gap.
